PhD Position in Public access Femtocells for future wireless communication networks

PhD Studentship

University of Leeds -Institute of Integrated Information

Name of School Contact: Dr. Li X Zhang Contact Details: l.x.zhang@leeds.ac.uk
Tel: 0113 3432005
Closing Date: 30 September 2012

Femtocell is a small and low power Base Station that covers a small area and is connected to the core cellular network through wired or wireless backhaul. Femtocell is considered as a vital element in expanding the capabilities of cellular networks to satisfy the increasing demands for high data rate multimedia services and anytime, anywhere data. This project aims to research and develop cost effective femtocell network for ubiquitous broadband coverage, particularly, for the busy metropolitan and rural area by using satellite backhaul, and to provide practical solutions to the interference, synchronisation and signalling problems to ensure satisfactory QoS and seamless mobility.

The studentship will involve theoretical analysis and computer simulation, underpinned by strong theoretical understanding. It is suitable for a motivated student who has the equivalent to an UK  classification (2:1) honours degree minimum, in electronic/electrical engineering, preferably with good knowledge in communication techniques. The successful candidate will work as part of a research team in wireless communications.
Funding:
The studentship will be £20,000 per year for three years, this sum is to cover both tuition fees and maintenance. Therefore, for a UK/EU student starting in the session 2012/13 the tuition fees would be £3,828 and the maintenance would be £16,172. For an international student starting in the session 2012/13 the tuition fee would be £16,200 and the maintenance £3,800. International candidates please note £3,800 is not sufficient to cover living costs in the UK for 12 months, we therefore estimate you would need to provide a further £7,000 of your own funding per year. Further guidance on the cost of living in Leeds can be found at http://www.internationalstudentsupport.leeds.ac.uk/assets/docs/uploads/Pre_Arrival_2012.pdf
How to Apply:
Formal applications for research degree study should be made on-line through the http://www.leeds.ac.uk/students/apply_research.htm.
Please state clearly on the funding section of the application form that you wish to be considered for the "Public access Femtocells for future wireless communication networks" scholarship. In the research information section please state the name Dr Li X Zhang.
The closing date for applications is 30th Sept 2012 with a commencement date of 30th October 2012 anticipated.
